Today is a sad day for Cinque Terre…

A sad day for our beloved Cinque Terre; we cannot tell the tragedy after a huge landslide that mainly affected Vernazza and Monterosso and many other villages in the countryside, such as Brugnato, Borghetto, Pignone and Aulla.

Many people are still to be found, at least 6 and 6 are dead unfortunately, some in the attempt to save others.

Here what happened in Cinque Terre.

They are strong and proud people and I’m pretty sure they’ll soon recover and fix any single stone, but in this moment they really need a great help from all those who need Cinque Terre.

We’ll soon post ways to help them. In the meantime, please be close to them with your thoughts!

Vernazza

Vernaza, Piazza Marconi, the main square of the village

On Tuesday 25th a violent storm and heavy rain let the land fall down from the hills to the town centre of the 2 villages on the sea, Monterosso and Vernazza. All the land, born by the water coming from rain and overflown torrents, chose the main streets of the villages as its new natural bed and reached this way the beaches, carrying, sweeping away and crushing all it found on its way.

Even though it sad the many lost their lives, it has to be said that even a greater tragedy could happen if the prompt alert of all the villagers had not understood the looming menace and put into safety many people.

We had a hotel in Monterosso booked for tuesday to thursday 25th-27th. Unfortunately we only made it to Levanto and police told us we had to stay there. We saw the roads here which are also affected and several shops were flooded. I know that it was 100 times worse in Monteresso and if it was not due to a car accident blocking the A12, we may have got there and witnessed the landslide. We were lucky. Some were not. Our prayers are with you all
